This brief addresses the state policy dimensions of college readiness. It identifies the key issues and problems associated with the college readiness gap and provides governors, legislators, and state education leaders with specific steps they need to take to close the readiness gaps in their states.

PEG, with an established track record in scoring essays for qualitative characteristics such as organization, support, word choice, and mechanics, has also performed well in studies of AI scoring for content and will be at the forefront of these national assessment developments.

White Papers

Among the complaints most teachers have about end-of-year tests is that they provide little or no actionable information about students, at least for the current school year. Even interim assessments, given three or four times a year, may not yield timely feedback, especially if portions need to be sent out for hand scoring of open-ended responses. For test feedback to be useful, it has to be tangible, transparent, actionable, customized, timely, ongoing, and consistent. That’s a tall order.

Making sure all students are college and career ready requires not only an alignment of curriculum and instruction with college and career requirements but also an approach to monitoring student progress on a continual basis, with in-class formative assessments, frequent interim assessments, and focused summative assessments.

The Educational Testing Service Invitational Conference of 1985 had as its theme “The Redesign of Testing for the 21st Century.” It has been a little over 25 years since the conference proceedings were published, and it is amazing to see that the future still looks a lot like it did then: cognitive-based assessment, online assessment, widespread use of computer-adaptive testing, universal access to technology, and instantaneous reporting of test results. So many wonderful things, still within our view but just beyond our grasp!

Practice and Application Tools

PEG Writing Scholar provides students with an initial round of spelling and grammar feedback that helps build a foundation for identifying areas of improvement in their writing. These additional grammar tools will help writers practice their grammar, learn new skills, and improve their overall writing.
